These dinosaur CVCe puzzles are sure to be a hit during your phonics activities and word work literacy centers! It’s the perfect compliment to our CVCe Center Activities.
PREPPING THE ACTIVITY
This activity is super quick and easy to prep. Just print the three pages, and then use a paper cutter to trim around the edges. Using scissors, cut the curvy lines in the middle of each dinosaur. The make these last year after year, I like to either print them on cardstock or laminate them.
DOING THE ACTIVITY
To start, we spread the puzzle pieces out on a table. We did the first one together. I picked up the dinosaur with the word bike and showed the students. We reviewed that the e at the end of word makes the vowel say its name. Together, we sound out the word bike.
Next I gave the kids some puzzles to do on their own. If students are just staring to learn CVCe words, give them 3 or 4 puzzles at a time so they don’t get overwhelmed. For kiddos who have had lots of practice with CVCe words, try giving them the whole batch at once and see how fast they can do the puzzles. They love trying to beat their previous times!
When the kids are ready to begin, have them spread out all of their pieces on a table or floor. They’ll choose one piece to start and read the word on the piece.
Then they look through the rest of the pieces and find the piece with the same word. Once they find the matching piece, they put the pieces together to complete the puzzle and read the word again.
The kiddos went through each piece until they had completed all of the dinosaur puzzles.
