PREPPING THE ACTIVITY
Prepping this activity is super quick and easy. Print the cards on regular paper and laminate so they can be used over and over. If you don’t have access to a laminator, you can put the cards in plastic sleeves instead. Cut along the outer and center lines. Grab some overhead (wet erase) markers or whiteboard (dry erase) markers, and you’re set!
These are our favorite sets of wet erase and dry erase markers 🙂
DOING THE ACTIVITY
As soon as my girls saw the colorful bears, they were super excited to get to work on this math activity! Middle Sister (kindergarten) grabbed a pink card first. She loves all things pink 🙂 First, we counted the number of little bears on the card. Middle Sister pointed to one bear at a time and counted, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.”
Using an overhead marker, she carefully wrote the number 7 in the square on the left.
Next, we looked at the expression written on the top of the card…7-3. Middle Sister then used her overhead marker to cross off 3 of the little bears. In the middle box, she wrote a 3.
Then she counted the number of little bears that were left. She pointed to each bear and counted, “1, 2, 3, 4!” She wrote a 4 in the box on the left. Now she was ready to read the full equation. “Seven minus three equals four.”
One by one, Middle Sister went through each bear card and did the subtraction problems. She had a blast counting and crossing off bears, and she gained a better understanding of subtraction. Math + Fun=WIN!
