Kids love playing with magnetic letters! Whether they’re walking around the house figuring out what the letters will stick to or using the letters to make words, magnetic letters are a valuable tool in our teacher tool belts. This activity is a great way for kiddos to practice beginning sounds while being active. Add this to your literacy centers, word work time, and phonics lessons for an extra dose of fun!

MATERIALS
All you need for this activity is a set of magnetic letters. Everything else will come from your surroundings in the the house, classroom, or outside. Here’s a great set that has both uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols.
PREPPING THE ACTIVITY
Put a few magnetic letters out, and let your kids choose one letter to start with. Middle Sister grabbed the letter B first.
We reviewed the sound that the letter B makes. Then I asked her to look around the house and find an object that starts with the B sound. She walked around and saw the bananas sitting on the counter. Excitedly, she yelled “Bananas!”
Next, I asked her to find another object that started with the B sound in the living room. After looking through some toys, she found her favorite read aloud book and said, “Book!”
At this point, Big Sister was interested 🙂 She brought out some of her craft stuff and asked Middle Sister to find something in her craft set. They girls looked through the materials and found the beads!
We continued looking for objects in the different parts of the house. When we were done with the letter B, the kids chose another letter to work with.
This activity is also super fun to do outside! Grab a little container for your letters and object, and set the kiddos off to explore outside!
